Welcome to Point Harbor Vacation Rentals

Point Harbor is a small community that lies at the tip of a peninsula in Currituck County that is surrounded by the Currituck Sound to the east and the Albermarle Sound to the west. Highway 158 runs down the center of this long, narrow finger of land that is considered the gateway to the Outer Banks region. Directly across the Currituck Sound from Point Harbor is Kitty Hawk Beach on the Outer Banks.

Attractions, historical points of interest and recreational opportunities are abundant in the Point Harbor region. The beaches of the area are "one of the best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast," as described by USA Weekend. There are a variety of campgrounds, marinas, hotels, motels, vacation rentals and restaurants in the area, as well. Attractions include the Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Wright Brothers National Memorial, Roanoke Island and The Lost Colony, the North Carolina Aquarium and the North Carolina Maritime Museum.

To the north across the Sound to the Outer Banks are the undeveloped beaches of Corolla and Carova, and the wild horses in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. Vacationing in Point Harbor region is a chance to experience the many sides of North Carolina - historical, natural and cultural, all in one place.

Point Harbor Attractions and Activities

Gardens and Parks

The Elizabethan Gardens (10.86 miles from center of Point Harbor): The Elizabethan Gardens, built in 1960 in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh's "Lost Colony," is home to one of the world's most exquisite collections of flowers and plants. In addition to its wide variety of annuals and perennials, this garden memorial is mainly known for its beautiful rose collection which includes The Queen Elizabeth Rose donated to the garden by Queen Elizabeth II. The garden also contains a statuary which houses a stone representation of Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Americas to English parents and prominent figure in American myth and folklore. The Elizabethan Gardens are contained within the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on the northernmost tip of Roanoke Island.

Jockey's Ridge State Park (12.06 miles from center of Point Harbor): Jockey's Ridge State Park is home to the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast, covering over 420 acres and towering from between 80 and 120 feet high. The local landscape and high winds make it an ideal area to hang-glide, sand-board and fly kites. The visitor's center houses a small museum which details the barren dunes and surrounding animal and plant life, fascinating for their ability to survive in an incredibly harsh ecosystem. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Roanoke Sound as part of the Outer Banks chain of islands, the park is slightly north of Nags Head.

Aquariums

North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island (11.9 miles from center of Point Harbor): The aquarium’s exhibits depict coastal Carolina’s aquatic environment from coastal freshwater alligators, river otters and turtles to saltwater hermit crabs and sting rays. One of three aquariums in the North Carolina Aquarium system, this branch is located in Manteo close to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Dare County Regional Airport. Other displays include a one-third scale replica of the USS Monitor, a 285,000-gallon ocean tank full of sharks, sea turtles and fish, and an exhibit depicting behind-the-scenes life at the aquarium.

Jurassic Park (15.58 miles from center of Point Harbor).

Historic Sites

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (11.21 miles from center of Point Harbor): Established in 1941, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves the history of Sir Walter Raleigh's "Lost Colony," the very first attempt of a colonial settlement on American soil. This settlement mysteriously failed in the late 1500s after ships stopped arriving on time from Britain with crucial supplies. Contained within the site lie the reconstructed five-sided fort, museum, interpretive programs and the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens, a period garden and memorial to America's original English colonists. The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site lies three miles north of Manteo, on Roanoke Island.

Wright Brothers National Memorial (7.17 miles from center of Point Harbor): The grounds of the Wright Brothers National Memorial contain historical markers recounting each attempt at powered flight and replica camp buildings; the most recognizable landmark is the 60-foot granite monument on top of Big Kill Devil Hill. It is located between the Atlantic Ocean and Albemarle Sound, just north of Nags Head. The visitor center showcases interpretive presentations and a full-scale reproduction of the Wright Flyer while the pavilion’s exhibit hall features special exhibits and a replica of the 1902 Wright Glider.

The Lost Colony (11.21 miles from center of Point Harbor).

Activities

You can engage in activities like swimming, sunning, shelling, surfing, kite boarding, fishing and boating. Currituck County offers five 18-hole golf courses and one 9-hole course. Some of the main golf courses are:

Sea Scape Golf Links (4.84 miles from center of Point Harbor).

Lost Treasure Golf (7.77 miles from center of Point Harbor).
