Currituck County's northern beaches around Corolla have been described by USA Weekend as ''one of the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast.''
The northernmost accessible town on the Outer Banks, Corolla has seen rapid development over the past ten years. Up until 1984, when the state extended Highway 12 north from the Dare County line, the town was a sleepy seaside village. Today, multimillion dollar vacation homes dwarf the village proper and make Corolla one of the most desirable upscale vacation destinations in the country. Ironically, it was the opening of the road and the ensuing traffic that eventually led to the relocation of one of Corolla's most famous attractions, the wild ponies.
At the center of the village is the Whalehead Club and Currituck Lighthouse complex. Millionaire industrialists built the Whalehead Club in the 1920's as a base for waterfowl hunting expeditions to the Banks. Today, the Club is being restored to its original glory and serves as a waterfowl museum.

Corolla Attractions and Activities
Parks
The Whalehead Club at Currituck Heritage Park: This house reminded me alot of the Biltmore House in Asheville. Not in size but in the grandeur of the house itself, how modern it was for it's time. It had an elevator, a refrigerator in the kitchen and central heat throughout most of the house. During the audio tour, you get to see many rooms in the house including the bedrooms of Mr and Mrs Knight. The bathrooms were plumbed for fresh and saltwater and Mrs Knight's bathroom had a bidet. This is one of the few homes on the Outer Banks that hasa basement. The furnishings were very luxurious and there were displays of photographs taken in the time the Knights lived there. Of course there is a gift shop-it's in the basement-and you can buy actual tiles from the original roof. Next time we will do the behind the scenes tour.
Museums
Currituck Beach Lighthouse & Gift Shop: You cannot visit Corolla without making a tour of the lighthouse and grounds. It's a great family outing, but can become crowded in season. The guides only allow less than 10 people at a time to tour the lighthouse. Best time to visit is right after a rain storm; it's deserted!

Wildlife
Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education: It's free to tour this facility. It's geared toward adults with beach conservation etc. but it has a nice walk-through display on local flora and fauna for the kids to enjoy. The gift shop is nicely stocked.
Golf Courses
Currituck Club: This Scottish links-style course is located off the scenic Currituck Sound. Oak trees, sand dunes, and wind add to the difficulty level. The greens are average-sized and undulating, and the contoured fairways are average width. Water hazards come into play on fourteen holes. The signature holes are #7 and #15. Hole #7, a 532-yard, par 5, requires a tee shot up a narrow fairway designed alongside the Currituck Sound, then an approach shot to a small green protected by sand bunkers. Hole #15, a 174-yard, par 3, also features a scenic view of the Currituck Sound, and requires a tee shot over a pond to the green. The green fees indicated are the morning rates. The fees are slightly cheaper for mid-day play and are reduced again after 4 PM.
Activities
In the beaches of Corolla you can go for activities like fishing, swimming, surfing, parasailing, boating, shelling and crabbing - it's all possible in Corolla. You can also enjoy playing golf while you are enjoying your vacation in Corolla.
