The Town of Duck gets its name from its ample waterfowl but also is home to over 400 species of birds. Despite its only 500 residents, Duck is quickly becoming one of the most popular vacation destination on the Outer Banks. With its tranquil beaches and numerous outdoor activites, Duck has established itself as vacation haven for tourists from all over the country. Duck's pet laws also have made it a favorite spot of dog owners as they allow pets on their beaches unleashed Attractions: US Army Field Research Facility: Located in Duck, NC, the FRF was established by the USACE in 1977 to support its coastal engineering research requirements. Since its creation, the facility has maintained a comprehensive, long-term monitoring program of the coastal ocean including waves, tides, currents, local meteorology, and the resultant beach response. The FRF is located on Hwy 12 and admission is free. Sixty-minute walking tours are offered mid-June through mid-August at 10 a.m. Monday - Friday. The Duck Trail: The Duck Trail was constructed and paid for by the property owners of Duck. It serves as a wonderful source of recreation for Duck residents and visitors and, its paramount purpose is provide pedestrians and cyclists a safe alternative to the highways.
